a5c7b9f00b University students Kohta and Yuka (Kohta's cousin) save a Diclonius girl called "Lucy" when they see her naked in a beach. In fact "Lucy" is a serial killer who is being searched by the government but they are not aware of who "Lucy" really is because her personality is split. A teenager girl escapes from a laboratory with the power to dismember people with her multiple invisible arms. On her way out, she gets shot and becomes a double-personality person, half-sweet, half-murderer. On her way, she meets people who have suffered the biggest horrors possible. Together, they will face the evil organization who uses other girls to track the original one. Elfen lied is a 13 episode anime featuring a sadistic pink haired girl who happens to be equipped with 4 invisible arms that shoot out of her back, enabling her to kill at a far range, and at a ridiculous speed. Throughout the series, we learn that this girl, Lucy, is part of a different race of human, knownthe diclonious (die-chlo-knee-ous). Diclonious are incredibly sadistic, and aside from those special arms (they're called vectors), they also posses two horns on their heads which resemble that of a cat's ear immensely. Anyway, this one diclonious, Lucy, has been kept in a facility for most of her life, and then one day, all hell breaks loose, she manages to escape ( this is basically where the story begins), and somehow she develops an alter ego, in which, when she is treated with kindness, is the cutest creature on the planet, but when treated like crap becomes a yandere serial killer. After she escapes, she is found on the beach by two college students/cousins who decide to take her in, but soon learn the government's after her. Throughout the series, we learn about the characters' backgrounds and histories…

I have to say, this is quite the story. I've never seen anything like it before and it was nice to watch something a little different for once. When I first heard about Elfen Lied, I was very eager to watch it. I was disappointed. It's not that the show sucks, actually not in the least ( aside from the English voice acting), it's just that I thought everything would play out differently throughout the show, in my mind… It was interesting, but I've seen much better anime before. For example, Soul Eater, now that was amazing and wasn't evenviolent! Anyways, perhaps if I had watched Elfen Lied with the subtitles, it might of been better, for I found the dubbed voices incredibly irritating, but what else is new? The show wasn't that well animated either, and the art wasn't that amazing, so I think the only real reason I'm giving it a seven is because of the story, and around the end of the anime is when I felt like the story really got interesting. As a matter of fact I was glued to my iPod screen around the last few episodes but I found the ending quite confusing.

Overall I found this anime a little overrated, my advice to you is that you read the manga before watching the show, it may help you understand better. Also if you haven't seen it yet, don't get overly excited about it… Because of the awesome first episode and the opening song, of course.

Unfortunately, this isn't one of those series that only gets better and better. Instead, it got worse and worse. I'm not easily offended by blood, gore & nudity. I don't disagree with romance, nor with visuals that don't match the story. But I am quite disappointed by expecting to get a brilliant anime (judging from all the ecstatic reviews all over the web) and receiving something awfully shallow.

Seriously people, WHY does everyone like this series so much?

The point is, in my opinion, that this anime tries to be everything at once, and fails to be anything at all. It contains a horroresque mix of blood, gore and suspense, it contains action-packed, graphic violence, realistic nudity (i.e. nudity where people are supposed to be nude and it's just silly to put clothes on them), ecchi nudity aka nudity for no other reason than to turn on pervs, super-cotton-candy-sweet-naive romance and even some science and sci-fi related things, never mind the "fantasy" part. Only, none of these parts really excite. There is no depth of story. At the end, you're left with so many questions you wonder whether you actually watched the thing or not. There is no depth of character. One of the main character is mostly absent from the story and replaced by some brainless creature that goes "nyu". And no amount of well executed fights or ecchi (depending on where your favor goes to) will compensate for that.

And then, the visuals. It took me nearly two episodes to figure out that the two kids living together were supposed to be around 20. I mean, what? While the animation is quite good, the naive way the main characters are portrayed grows annoying very fast.

Conclusion? It's not gritty, nor mature. It's childish and perverse. For everyone who seeks a deep, romantic story with gritty action/horror elements, it isn't this!

And last but not least, it reminds me somewhat of Chobits. Though Chobits had a bit more of a entertainment value. So for all you people who DIDN'T like Chobits, stay clear of thiswell.
